News Reporter

One of the reporters in the CKEC Newsroom, Matt got into radio completely by accident.

Originally from Truro, Matt graduated from Cobequid Education Centre in 2000 and eventually found his way to the Radio and Television Arts program of the Nova Scotia Community College in Kentville. At home behind the camera in high school, Matt had dreams of being a TV cameraman, but television production wasn’t for him. Instead, Matt found a home behind the microphone in the radio booth and he’s been doing it ever since. Matt came to Pictou County and CKEC in September 2003. He covers local events ranging from municipal council meetings, to major sporting events and everything else in between. If you’re at a community meeting around Pictou County there’s a good chance you’ll bump into Matt.

He’s lived in Truro, Cape Breton and the Annapolis Valley , and isn’t shy about telling you that Pictou County is far and away his favourite spot to call home. It is after all where he met his wife Jennifer. They live in New Glasgow with their son Robbie, who was born in June 2007, and two dogs, Riley and Hayley.

Like most in the CKEC News Department, Matt is a massive sports fan, and can quote stats from leagues you’ve never even heard of. He bleeds blue and gold, a colour scheme that doubles for his beloved Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. A constant backer of the underdog, Matt also backs the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Pirates. Getting into his favourite clubs in European football (soccer) and Hockey Leagues would use up too much bandwidth to list. Also like most in the Newsroom, Matt’s mind is filled with useless trivia of all sorts. He was a national Reach for the Top finalist and Provincial Champion in 2000, and no one in his family will play Trivial Pursuit with him anymore. He’s a card-carrying nerd that grew up playing Dungeons & Dragons, is involved with the Society for Creative Anachronism and owns and operates his own fantasy East Coast based wrestling league called Acadian Wrestling.

Matt likes music... a lot! His favorite East Coast artists include the Jimmy Swift Band, Air Traffic Control, Alert the Medic, the Dirty Poets and Matt Mays & El Torpedo.
